According to relevant information, BMW will use CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) carbon fiber composite material on its i3 production car in 2013. The selected material is a slightly lower grade industrial grade CFRP material, and the cost can be controlled at about half of traditional carbon fiber materials.

Chang Yizhi, a chemical industry researcher at China Investment Consulting, pointed out that in recent years, the development of lightweight automobiles has become a trend in order to improve fuel efficiency and reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Carbon fiber composite materials have the characteristics of light weight, high tensile modulus, and high tensile strength, and their application in automobiles is significantly better than other materials such as steel. It is expected that their application prospects in the automotive field will be very optimistic in the future.

It is reported that the demand for carbon fiber composite materials in the automotive industry is growing rapidly, and many automotive OEM factories are already collaborating with carbon fiber manufacturers to develop usable automotive components. For example, Evonik has collaborated with Johnson Controls, Jacob Plastic, and Toho Tenax to develop carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) lightweight materials; Dongli and Daimler have reached a joint research and development agreement to develop CFRP components for Mercedes Benz.

It is expected that with the increasing demand in the automotive industry in the future, the market capacity of carbon fiber composite materials will further expand. According to data recently released by American consulting firm Frost&Sullivan, the composite annual growth rate of carbon fiber composite materials will reach 31.5% from 2010 to 2017. It is expected that by 2017, the global automotive carbon fiber composite material market will grow to 7885 tons, and its sales will also increase from $14.7 million in 2010 to $95.5 million in 2017.

The "2011-2015 Investment Analysis and Prospect Forecast Report on China's New Materials Industry" released by China Investment Consulting shows that carbon fiber, as an automotive material, has the biggest advantages of light weight and high strength. Its weight is only 20% -30% of steel, but its hardness can reach more than 10 times that of steel. Therefore, carbon fiber materials are now highly favored by car manufacturers and have been widely used in car interior and exterior decoration.
